If your elderly grandmother found herself today in a fight to the death with Conor McGregor, would you put your money on McGregor? Any gambler would excuse you if you did, since granny's odds are slim to none. Nonetheless, any decent person -- in this albeit unlikely scenario -- would bet on and root for his grandma.
Some people voice objections to Libertarian candidates, saying that such candidates stand no chance. Recently I heard such an objection, which inwardly amused me since it was coming from a Republican in NYC about to vote for Curtis Sliwa against the inevitability of Zohran Mamdani's mayoral victory. The objector was hypothesizing on a Libertarian's chances for a different statewide office.
Libertarians would have more respect for these objectors if they were more sincere ; they vote for their doomed candidate because they prefer him. If these objectors were more self-aware, they would realize that we support our Libertarian candidates for the same reason. Maybe realization of this commonalty would bring us all into better mutual understanding.
At day's end, politics is not about backing the horse most likely to win. It's about voting your conscience for the candidate most aligned with it... and having your vote counted on the correct side of history!
